About Baby Names Trends
A baby-name site built on official records, with the answer first and the method in the open.
Baby Names Trends shows how popular every baby name really is in the US and how that has changed since 1880, where in the country it is popular, how old the people who have it are, how many classmates a child might share it with, and what it means and where it comes from. It also has tools for the hard part: choosing a name with your partner and checking how it sounds with your last name.
Where the information comes from
Counts come from the Social Security Administration's baby-name records, the official tally of names given to US babies, released every May; this edition uses the 2025 data. Birth totals come from the National Center for Health Statistics, class sizes from the National Center for Education Statistics, and life expectancy from SSA's actuaries. Meanings, origins and pronunciations are researched from scholarly dictionaries and other references and written in our own words. The data and methods page explains every calculation.
What a name page tells you
Each name page starts with the short answer: what the name means, how to say it (with a recording), its rank and trend, and the split between girls and boys. Below that come the full history since 1880, the name's popularity once every spelling is counted together, the chance a child shares it with a classmate, how many people alive today have it and how old they are, a map of where it is most common, names with a similar history, and the sources behind the meaning. For the most used names there are also pages of middle names and sibling names that go with it.
How the site is kept up to date
Social Security publishes a new year of names every May. When it does, every count, rank, map and list on the site is recalculated from the new files, and we publish a trend report on what changed: the 2026 report covers babies born in 2025. Meanings and pronunciations are reviewed continually as readers send corrections.
What you won't find here
No rankings based on page views, no truncated lists, no invented meanings, no numerology, and no sign-up walls. The site has no advertising. The tools run in your browser and don't ask for your email.
