What does the name Abner mean?

Abner is a Hebrew name from the Bible: Abner, son of Ner, was King Saul's cousin and the commander of his army (1 Samuel 14:50). Wiktionary explains it as av, "father", plus a word for light or lamp, so "father of light". The JPS translation notes that the verse spells the name Abiner, which Wikipedia reads as "my father is Ner", after his father's name. Because the sources read it in two ways, no single meaning is given.

How sure is this? Uncertain. Two readings: 'father of light' (Wiktionary) or 'my father is Ner' (Wikipedia, from the spelling Abiner).
