What does the name Amiri mean?

Amiri is a Persian surname, as Wiktionary records, formed from amir, "commander, prince", a word borrowed from Arabic, with the Persian ending -i, which Wiktionary explains as forming adjectives meaning "of" or "belonging to". As an American first name it is best known from the poet and playwright Amiri Baraka (1934-2014), born Everett LeRoi Jones, who later took that name. It is closely related to the names Amir and Amira.
