What does the name Eve mean?

Eve is the English form of Hebrew Chavvah, the first woman in Genesis. DMNES derives it from Hebrew meaning to live or give life. Genesis 3:20 says Adam named her because she was the mother of all the living, and the JPS note points out the link between her Hebrew name, chavvah, and chai, living. The name came into English through Greek and Latin Eva; DMNES records it in England from the late 12th century. In Ireland it was sometimes used to render the Irish name Aoife. Eva is the Latin form.

חַוָּה (Biblical Hebrew, “Eve (Chavvah); related to 'to live'”)
