What does the name Jordan mean?

Jordan is the name of the river in which, according to the Gospels, John the Baptist baptized Jesus. The Hebrew Yarden is of uncertain origin; DMNES mentions a possible root meaning 'to descend, flow down'. Wikipedia notes that crusaders and pilgrims brought back Jordan water to baptize their children, and DMNES finds Jordan as a man's name in England from 1155. It faded after the Middle Ages and returned in the 20th century as a name for both boys and girls.

יַרְדֵּן (Biblical Hebrew, “Yarden, the Jordan River”)ירד (Hebrew, “to descend, flow down (possible root)”)

How sure is this? Probable. The name clearly comes from the river; the meaning of the river's own name is uncertain ('descend' is only a possibility).
