What does the name Maisie mean?

Maisie is a Scottish pet form of Margaret, through the short form May (or Gaelic Mairead) with the diminutive -sie. DMNES derives Margaret from Greek margarítēs, "pearl", and lists its many saints and queens; Yonge's 1884 index also lists Maisie as Scottish, "pearl". It is now used mainly as an independent name. Margaret was a royal name in Scotland, where DMNES notes an 11th-century queen who was later made a saint.
