What does the name Marie mean?

Marie is the French form of Mary, and Wiktionary notes it was also an early English spelling of Mary. It goes back through Latin Maria and Greek Maria to Hebrew Miryam, the name of Moses' sister, by way of Aramaic Maryam. DMNES calls the origin of Miryam uncertain: it is often derived from a root meaning "bitter," but others suggest "rebellion." DMNES lists Mary, the mother of Jesus, among the name's bearers. Wiktionary notes that Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and German also use Marie, partly borrowed from French. It has been used in the US since records began in 1880.
