What does the name Nathaniel mean?

Nathaniel is an English form of Nathanael, the Greek spelling of Hebrew Netanel, 'God has given', from a verb 'to give' and El, 'God'; DMNES gives the same meaning. In the Gospel of John, Nathanael is a disciple whom Jesus calls a true Israelite. Wiktionary says the -iel spelling arose under the influence of Daniel. DMNES notes the name came into use among Protestants in the 16th century, and it was taken up by English Puritans.
