What does the name Noemi mean?

Noemi is the Italian and Spanish form of Naomi, the mother-in-law of Ruth in the Bible. DMNES explains Hebrew Naomi as "my pleasantness," from a root meaning pleasant or delightful. In Ruth 1:20 Naomi plays on her own name, asking to be called Mara, bitter, instead. The Wycliffite Bible spelled it Noemy, and DMNES notes the name came into use among Protestants in the 16th century. Wiktionary records Noemi in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
