What does the name Norma mean?

Norma was popularized as the name of the heroine, a Druid priestess, in Vincenzo Bellini's opera Norma (1831), with a libretto by Felice Romani, as Wiktionary notes. Its origin is not documented: it is sometimes explained as Latin norma 'rule, pattern' or as a feminine of Norman. Norma was common in the US in the 1920s and 1930s; Norma Jeane Baker became Marilyn Monroe.
