Orion is a giant hunter in Greek mythology, already mentioned in Homer's Odyssey, who was placed among the stars as the constellation Orion. The Greek name Ōríōn has no agreed origin; Wiktionary mentions a speculative link with an Akkadian phrase meaning "light of heaven" but calls it unsupported. As a boy's name it is modern, chosen for the constellation.
