What does the name Sergio mean?

Sergio is the Italian, Spanish and Portuguese form of Sergius, a Roman family name. Yonge's 1884 History of Christian Names lists Sergio and mentions the Roman governor Sergius Paulus of the Book of Acts. The sources consulted do not explain the Roman name itself. Its Christian use comes from early saints such as the soldier-martyr Sergius. The often-repeated meaning "servant" (from Latin servus) has no support.
