What does the name Stone mean?

Stone is the English word stone, from Old English stān, used first as a surname and then as a first name. Harrison's surname dictionary (1918) explains the surname as belonging to a place called Stone or as naming someone who lived by a notable stone or rock, and cites a 13th-century 'de la Stone' from the Hundred Rolls. Wiktionary also allows an occupational sense, for someone who worked with stone. Its use as a boys' first name is modern and draws on the plain word.
