How common is my name?

Type any first name. We check it against every name the Social Security Administration has recorded for US babies since 1880, about 106,000 names in all, and show how many babies got it, when it peaked, its latest rank, and roughly how many people with the name are alive today.

Where the numbers come from

Social Security publishes every first name given to at least five babies of the same sex in a year, nationally since 1880. Spellings count separately (Sofia and Sophia are different names here), and names given to fewer than five babies in every year never appear, so a name that is not found is genuinely rare. The estimate of people alive multiplies each decade's babies by the share of people born then who are still alive, from SSA's life tables, and counts only people born in the US.
