What does the name Jasper mean?

Jasper is the English form of Gaspar or Caspar, the name medieval tradition gave to one of the three Magi who visited the infant Jesus. Wiktionary and Wikipedia trace it through a Hebrew word gizbar, 'treasurer', to an Old Persian word of the same meaning. Wikipedia stresses that the name is unrelated to the gemstone jasper, which has a separate Semitic origin, although the two are often linked. Caspar, Gaspar and Kasper are its forms in other languages.

*ganzabara (Old Persian, “treasurer”)גִּזְבָּר (Biblical Hebrew, “gizbar, treasurer”)

How sure is this? Probable. The Persian 'treasurer' derivation is standard for Gaspar/Caspar, but the Magi's names are a medieval tradition.
